Are you registered to vote? Time is running out!
A reminder for Michigan teens who are 18 years old, or who are turning 18 before the November 4 general election: YOU HAVE UNTIL OCTOBER 6 TO REGISTER TO VOTE! After that date, it will be too late, and you will be unable to vote on November 4. If you haven’t yet registered, follow these simple steps:
- Download, print and fill out the Michigan Voter Registration Form, or obtain a copy of the form at your local CADL branch.
- Click here to find your local clerk address. This is where you will deliver/mail your completed form.
- Your form will take a short time to process. You can check your status and find your polling place at the Michigan Voter Information Center. Your polling place is where you will actually go to cast your vote on November 4.
Once you’ve registered, prepare yourself to vote by checking out our Voter Information page. You’ll find links to useful voting guides and election information, as well as contact info for local campaign headquarters, and more. You can also take advantage of our catalog to get informed about candidates, issues and the process – Choosing The President 2008, for example, or books by presidential contenders John McCain and Barack Obama.
Remember: if you’re 18 or older, or will turn 18 before November 4, you have a right to vote! Don’t lose that right because you forgot to fill out the paperwork!

What are You Doing with Your Summer Vacation?
Why don’t you think about Metamorphosing @ your library? Our teen summer reading program theme this year is Metamorphosis, and we have tons of fun lined up for you this summer. Maybe you can change yourself, change your neighborhood, or change your world—if you decide to change, your local Capital Area District Library branch has the books that you can use to start the change.
Maybe you just want the change of reading for fun without having to do a book report or project on what you read… check out our teen books at every CADL branch. Can’t find what you’re looking for at your branch? Place a hold or ask a staff member to do it for you… we’ll do our best to get you what you want. Sign up for our summer reading program at any CADL location, keep track of your reading time, and bring the log back in to collect some cool prizes—books and T–shirts, anyone? You’ll also be entered to win prizes like Biggby and Target gift cards, movie passes, and Best Buy gift cards.
Maybe you want to find out how to volunteer, help save the environment, or just eat healthier… our teen nonfiction books can help you make some big and small changes this summer. Check out Loree Griffin Burns’ book, Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion to find out just where that paper cup you threw out last year might be now. Or try The Teen Guide to Global Action: How to Connect with Others (Near & Far) to Create Social Change by Barbara A. Lewis to get inspired about changing your world.
Whatever changes you would like to make this summer, come to your local CADL branch to start metamorphosing!

The YA Novels of Patrick Jones
If you’re lucky enough to be a student at Mason High School in one of a select few English classes, you had the chance to meet author Patrick Jones on Tuesday, May 13. But even if you didn’t, you can still check out his novels for Young Adults at your local CADL branch.
A Michigan native (he was born in Flint), Patrick Jones was a teen librarian before he began writing fiction. His novels feature teenage characters caught up in dramatic, real-life situations. Things Change, Chasing Tail Lights and Nailed are all available now through your local library. His latest novel, Cheated, was released in April, and is coming soon to CADL.
With Summer Reading almost here, Patrick Jones is a great author to discover, if you haven’t already! And if you have a favorite Patrick Jones book, we’d love to read your review here on the blog.

Make YOUR Voice Heard!
To help serve you better, CADL wants to know what Teen Programming you’d like to see at your local library! Maybe you’d like a club to talk about music … or a place to share original writing, art or poetry. Maybe you want a book group devoted to your favorite genre – like Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Adventure or Mystery. Maybe you even have a great idea for a one-time special event you’d like to see happen at the library.
Whatever your hopes, suggestions or great ideas, we hope you’ll share them here by posting below. And if you want to chime in with support for someone else’s idea, that’s great, too! Just remember: along with your post, it would be helpful to include your grade and home library branch.

C-SPAN “Road to the White House”
On July 12, from 9am – noon in front of the State Capitol Building, downtown, you have the chance to be part of the C-SPAN “Road to the White House” tour. The campaign 2008 bus, which is a rolling, 45 foot television production studio, will be parked outside the Capitol building in order to promote the 2008 presidential campaign and C-SPAN’s coverage of it. The cool thing is that while they are here they want to talk specifically with middle school students, high school students, and first time voters, so that means you. Don’t miss your chance to experience a part of history in the making.July 6, 2007
