What are You Doing with Your Summer Vacation?
Why don’t you think about Metamorphosing @ your library? Our teen summer reading program theme this year is Metamorphosis, and we have tons of fun lined up for you this summer. Maybe you can change yourself, change your neighborhood, or change your world—if you decide to change, your local Capital Area District Library branch has the books that you can use to start the change.
Maybe you just want the change of reading for fun without having to do a book report or project on what you read… check out our teen books at every CADL branch. Can’t find what you’re looking for at your branch? Place a hold or ask a staff member to do it for you… we’ll do our best to get you what you want. Sign up for our summer reading program at any CADL location, keep track of your reading time, and bring the log back in to collect some cool prizes—books and T–shirts, anyone? You’ll also be entered to win prizes like Biggby and Target gift cards, movie passes, and Best Buy gift cards.
Maybe you want to find out how to volunteer, help save the environment, or just eat healthier… our teen nonfiction books can help you make some big and small changes this summer. Check out Loree Griffin Burns’ book, Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion to find out just where that paper cup you threw out last year might be now. Or try The Teen Guide to Global Action: How to Connect with Others (Near & Far) to Create Social Change by Barbara A. Lewis to get inspired about changing your world.
Whatever changes you would like to make this summer, come to your local CADL branch to start metamorphosing!

Return to Adventure!
Indiana Jones is back, and you’ll find him at your local library! Indy’s latest big-screen adventure, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is now available as a novelization from acclaimed author James Rollins, capturing all of the thrills and action of the blockbuster film. (We hope to have the official graphic novel and original soundtrack album soon!)
Or, if you need to get caught up on Indy’s previous outings, the original Adventures of Indiana Jones (including Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade) are available in a single DVD collection. We’ve also got Volumes One, Two and Three of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, which fill in the missing years of Indy’s early life as an explorer, soldier and spy! (Much of the above is also still available on VHS.)
You can dig even deeper into the legend with Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Guide and The Complete Making of Indiana Jones, containing fascinating secrets and behind-the-scenes details for all four films! And while you’re reading about the Man with the Hat, why not let your ears in on the adventure by popping in John Williams’ Greatest Hits, including his world-famous Indiana Jones themes?
P.S. If you’ve seen the new film, you can post your review below! Or, tell us how you rank the movies, from best to worst.

What Are You Enjoying?
It’s that time again! Time to share what you’ve been enjoying recently, whether it’s books, music, movies, games or anything else!
I’ve recently discovered the dark fantasy/horror of William Hope Hodgson, an early 20th century author best described as the missing link between Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. His writing can be challenging to read at times, since much of it is written in an archaic style — but his imagination is unmatched, and he does an amazing job of creating a sense of sustained dread. I’m part-way through a novel called The Night Land, which (for now) you can only get by ordering through MeLCat. But CADL has a collection of some of his best short stories called Adrift on the Haunted Seas. That’s a great place to start, if you’re curious.
As for what I’ve been watching, I’ve been hooked on the TV show Bones. Loosely inspired by the best-selling novels of Kathy Reichs, the series chronicles the unlikely partnership between FBI Agent Seeley Booth (played by David Boreanaz, aka “Angel” from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (played by Emily Deschanel). It’s got a great cast of quirky characters, and humor is a key element. It’s not for the squeamish, though – as a “forensic anthropologist”, Bones’ job is to reconstruct victims from their decomposed remains! Both Season One and Season Two are currently available on DVD.
Moving on to lighter fare, Invincible by Troy Denning, the final volume in the nine-book Star Wars: Legacy of the Force series, is about to be released. This has been a terrific series, and you can place your hold here. Also new for pop-culture fans is Peter David’s novelization for Iron Man, the superhero film that’s getting great reviews and tearing up the box office.
How about you? What are YOU enjoying?

The YA Novels of Patrick Jones
If you’re lucky enough to be a student at Mason High School in one of a select few English classes, you had the chance to meet author Patrick Jones on Tuesday, May 13. But even if you didn’t, you can still check out his novels for Young Adults at your local CADL branch.
A Michigan native (he was born in Flint), Patrick Jones was a teen librarian before he began writing fiction. His novels feature teenage characters caught up in dramatic, real-life situations. Things Change, Chasing Tail Lights and Nailed are all available now through your local library. His latest novel, Cheated, was released in April, and is coming soon to CADL.
With Summer Reading almost here, Patrick Jones is a great author to discover, if you haven’t already! And if you have a favorite Patrick Jones book, we’d love to read your review here on the blog.
